R & R at the USO

The Manuel Barrios Cottage is now a 1940s USO. Prior to the United States entering WWII, Mary Shotwell Ingraham and General George C. Marshall proposed creating a civilian organization to bolster patriotic enthusiasm for military personnel. Six organizations came together to form the United Service Organizations, or USO on February 4, 1941. The USO provided recreational, social, and spiritual support at home and abroad for millions of service members during WWII. Pensacola’s local USO club, located at 25 S Spring Street, hosted many social events during the 1940s. The USO Northwest Florida continues to support military personnel in Pensacola.

The Pyramidal roof Gulf Coast cottage, built around 1888, was once a common sight in Pensacola. These small houses had only two rooms, which were often rented separately.
