Since 1881, when W. D. Chipley declared the area presently known as DeFuniak Springs would be the perfect spot for a town, this area has grown and flourished into a charming community in Northwest Florida.
In 2024, the UWF Historic Trust partnered with DeFuniak Landmarks with the goal of extending the mission of the Trust – to collect, preserve, interpret and share the history of Northwest Florida.
We aim to create a culture of architectural preservation, historic education and community connections in DeFuniak Springs.
We believe that historic preservation is not simply about protecting old buildings; it's about protecting the irreplaceable narratives woven into their very fabric. It's about understanding the hands that crafted them, the lives they sheltered and the lessons they teach us about who we are and where we've come from.
Through engaging educational programs, hands-on workshops, and community partnerships, DeFuniak Landmarks empowers individuals of all ages to become stewards of their local history. We offer:
- Educational programs: From interactive walking tours to in-depth lectures by renowned historians, we bring the past to life for students, adults, and families alike.
- Hands-on workshops: Learn traditional building techniques, restoration methods, and historic preservation best practices through our engaging workshops.
- Community partnerships: We collaborate with local organizations, government agencies, and residents to advocate for historic preservation initiatives and celebrate our shared heritage.
By preserving the architectural heritage of DeFuniak Springs, we safeguard not only the physical structures themselves, but also the memories, traditions, and values that they embody. We create a stronger sense of place, foster community pride and lay the foundation for a more sustainable future.
